Gordon Vivian de la Mothe was born in Carriacou the sister - island of Grenada in 1 933. As a youth he was an active amateur artist, and in 1958 as was common with many of his generation. He travelled to Eng-and, of which Grenada was then a colony.
After studying Art as a part time student of Luten College of Technology, Bedfordshire England he went on to study full-time at the Maidstone College of Art, Kent, England, graduating in 1972 with a diploma in Fine Art and Design. The following year he completed an Art Teacher's Diploma at the University of Liverpool, Lancashire, England. With these qualifications, he started teaching in 1973 at a secondary school in Kent. Throughout the next decades while teaching, he continued to practice painting in his spare time. Mr. de la Mothe's work grew in recognition within the Arts Community in London leading to exhibitions of his work at numerous Art shows. Amongst the most notable shows, at which his work was exhibited were the Royal Academy, Summer Exhibition (1975 & 1976), the New English Art Club (1974 & 1976) and the Royal Society of British Artists (1976 & 1977). In 1979, he became founder member of the Rainbow Art Group, a garnering of artists from the non-European Commonwealth, which attempted to promote their work in Britain. Later, de la Mothe became an active member of the Caribbean Teachers Association of England (CTA), which at the time was actively involved in trying to improve the self-image and educational standards of non-European immigrant children. He commenced his work in the CTA by giving illustrated lectures from a collection of positive images he had made of African people throughout the ages. In 1993 the material was published as a book "Reconstructing the Black Image" by Trentham Books, Stoke-on- Trent Staffordshire. Mr. de la Mothe was also responsible for mounting several exhibitions of the work of Grenadian artists at the Commonwealth Institute in England. He was a Lecturer in the Art and Design at the T. A. Marryshow Community College, St. George's, Grenada in 1999. Although he retired in 2005 the Art Department continues to function. There is a course for elementary teachers and graduates from the orginal course now teach in many secondary schools in Grenada. Since returning to Grenada de la Mothe continues in his efforts to promote the Visual Arts. |
