Beausejour Great House Print E-mail

One of the best examples of great houses and plantation system in Grenada could be found at Beausejour together with the a joining villages of Happy Hill and the area called the Fence.  The history of land settlement in this area could be trace to the early French period of the 1650s the French first built a fort call Fort Du Marquis. This was the second area on the island to be settled thus it was frequently attack by the Caribs. It was also one of the early plantations on the western said of the island since it is the only place with flat lands for cultivation.

The Beausejour was the seen of fighting during the Fedon Rebellion of 1795 to96. This resulted in the distruction of the first great house whose ruins could be found approximately 75 yards from this site.   This present great house is the second great house building to be found in the area.
